What is a travel journal and why make one?

Have a blast reliving your trip as you make your travel journal or scrapbook!
A travel journal is a creative place to save the memories from a trip in a way that feels more personal than a phone camera roll. It can be a scrapbook album, a notebook, or a mix of both, depending on your style.
Some people build a vacation scrapbook around printed photos and captions. Others make a more layered journal using paper bits, receipts, maps, and scribbled notes from the trip. There is no scrapbook police here, which is honestly the best part.
It is a great way to keep the full story of a trip, not just the pretty highlights. Sure, the beach sunset and beautiful scenery photos are gorgeous, but the tiny moments matter too. The train ticket you almost lost, the café napkin with a doodle on it, the funny thing somebody said when you got turned around for the third time. Those are the little memories that make a page feel alive.
Travel pages also make it easier to enjoy your photos instead of letting them sit in your phone forever. A travel scrapbook gives those memories a home, and a travel journal lets you add personality, texture, and all the chaos-cute details that make your trip feel like your trip.
If you are more of a junk journal person, you do not even need printed pictures to get started. You can build amazing layouts with ephemera, notes, and layered paper, then add photos later if you want.
How do I organize travel photos and keepsakes for a scrapbook page?

Here’s a quick checklist:
- Pick one trip and one theme (city, beach, road trip, weekend getaway).
- Choose 5–10 favorite photos.
- Gather flat keepsakes (tickets, receipts, maps, postcards).
- Build the page with one hero photo + supporting photos.
- Add a 2–3 sentence caption so you remember the story later.
The easiest way to organize travel photos and keepsakes is to sort by moment, not by perfection. Start by pulling everything from one trip into one pile: phone pics, printed photos, ticket stubs, brochures, receipts, postcards, and any little bits you saved because they felt important.
Next, make quick groups. You can sort by day, location, or activity (airport, hotel, sightseeing, food, shopping, beach, road trip stops). This makes it way easier to build travel pages that actually tell a story instead of feeling random.
If you have a lot of photos, pick one hero image first. Use a large photo as your anchor, then add one smaller photo or a few supporting shots around it. If you are doing a single page, stick to one main memory. If you want to cover a whole day, create a multi-photo layout and use labels or mini captions to keep it easy to follow.
For keepsakes, trim bulky items down and save originals in a separate photo album if needed. You can also photocopy fragile items so your page stays pretty without risking damage. Add personal touches like handwritten notes, tiny maps, or a list of favorite places to eat. That is the stuff that makes a travel spread feel like you.
Pro tip for sanity: put each trip in a zipper pouch before you start crafting. Label it with the destination so when you are ready for your next trip pages, everything is already together.

FAQs: Travel Scrapbooks or Journals
Need a little creative nudge, or staring at your supplies like “cute, now what?” This FAQ section answers the most common travel scrapbook and travel journal questions, so you can stop overthinking and start making pages.
Start simple and start fast, before your memories blur together. Pick one trip, gather your photos and paper keepsakes, and choose a format that feels doable, like a small travel album, a notebook, or a few scrapbook layouts instead of a full book. Print a handful of favorite photos first, then build 2 to 3 pages around one part of the trip, like arrival day, a favorite meal, or one sightseeing stop. You do not need to finish the whole thing in one weekend. A few pages done is better than a pile of supplies staring at you.
Keep flat, meaningful pieces that help tell the story. Great picks include boarding passes, maps, museum tickets, receipts, postcards, brochures, luggage tags, business cards from favorite spots, and packaging from local treats. If something is bulky, snap a photo of it and add the picture instead. The goal is not to save everything. The goal is to save the pieces that help you remember how the trip felt.
A scrapbook is usually built around photos, memories, and keepsakes, often with a more organized, album-style look, like a few of the scrapbook layouts in this post. Junk journals are all about freedom and fun! They don’t have to include photos and often use found papers, ticket stubs, and layered textures. If you want to see the difference in action, just scroll through the skeleton ideas right here for inspiration! We also have a post giving examples of the difference. Check it out here!
Use a grid. Print smaller photos (2×3 or 2×2), pick one hero photo, and keep embellishments minimal so the page doesn’t feel cramped.
