What is a Christmas scrapbook and why make one?

A Christmas scrapbook is a handmade album that gathers your holiday memories in one place.
You will love flipping through it in years to come. It’s not just your photos from tree trimming and Christmas morning, but also little bits of life like gift tags, ticket stubs, and even journaling that captures the funny quotes, traditions, and tiny moments you will want to remember. Pages can be simple or “extra,” using patterned paper, white or embossed cardstock, and favorite embellishments like die cuts, puffy stickers, ribbon, and ephemera.
Why make one? It turns a busy season into something meaningful you can revisit all year. Crafting a page is a relaxing way to slow down, and it can become a cozy tradition to do with family on Christmas Eve or over the break. You get a creative outlet and a finished keepsake that tells the story behind the photos, not just the highlight reel.
Style-wise, there is room for everyone. Some layouts lean classic with traditional Christmas scrapbook paper, while others mix vintage finds and paper scraps into modern, festive spreads. You don’ t even need pictures! That is what junk journaling is all about.
So find your aesthetic of clean lines or layered texture and special effects, these ideas will keep you inspired long after December 25.
Jump to LayoutsHow do I choose a color palette and theme for my holiday pages?

Choosing a color palette starts with your scrapbook titles and overall vibe. Pick one anchor hue (red, emerald, blush, navy), one supporting hue, and one metallic or neutral to ground it. Then choose a theme that matches your photos and mood. For Christmas junk journal ideas, classic themes like Santa and his reindeer with a sack of toys feel nostalgic; snowflakes, snowmen, and winter themes read cozy and wintry; Christmas trees or Christmas tree ornaments lean festive and graphic. If your pictures are warm-lit and homey, try reds, creams, and gold. If they’re bright outdoor shots, cool blues, whites, and silver will sing.
Shop your stash: pull background cardstock and ink spray that match, plus ribbon, washi, and enamel dots. Build a little “kit” so decisions are done before you start. As you design, keep finishes consistent (all satin or all glitter) and repeat colors three times on a page for cohesion. Use foam squares to add dimension in your chosen palette, and let your sticker title lock the theme in place.
Let your photos guide specific story angles: a Christmas party, Christmas morning, or Christmas dinner can each get its own palette and motif. Celebratory confetti and champagne for party pages, candy-cane red for morning, candlelit neutrals for dinner. Tuck in gift tags and paper ornaments as on-theme embellishments, and finish with journaling that ties the palette to the memory. When you’re done, consider compiling related spreads into custom photo books so the color story carries through the whole season.

Slowestuff Blog Scrapbook Division – Monster of Mayhem Crafters
Want more Christmas junk journal and scrapbook ideas (or Fall & Halloween, or maybe coffee pages or color themes) but are not totally sure what separates scrapbooking from junk journaling? Here’s how we categorize them. Scrapbooks are focused around photos, while junk journals don’t necessarily have pictures. That’s kind of it in a nutshell!
Scrapbooks are great for preserving those favorite memories with family members or making something that feels like a keepsake. Junk journals? They’re perfect for experimenting, using scraps from Valentine’s Day cards, and just having fun with different textures and vibes.
We actually have a whole blog post talking about the difference, with examples of each. Check it out here!

FAQs: Christmas Scrapbooking
Need a bit of a creative boost, or have a question as to what to do with that white cardstock? The FAQ section answers some of the most pressing questions, not just for December 25, but all year long.
Think in repeatable “recipes” so you’re never stuck. A simple grid (four squares) works with photos, journaling cards, or a mix of both. A “shelf” layout of one horizontal strip of paper with photos sitting on top, gives you a natural spot for a title and a tiny embellishment cluster. Center one 4×6 photo using the rule of thirds, add a small cluster in three places to guide the eye, and finish with a short caption. Tag cascades (three to five layered tags) are great for tucking a mini photo on one tag and journaling on another. Pocket pages are the easiest of all: slide in prints and fill empty pockets with festive journaling cards and stickers. Keep it polished with a simple formula: one title, one story, and up to three tiny clusters per page.
As they say, the hardest part is just to start. You can get started on pages, and not even an entire book. To get a whole book, start with the size you want. 12×12 for big, layered layouts, 6×8 or A5 for quick wins, or a traveler’s notebook for simple, cozy pages. Pick a loose theme (December Daily, Christmas Eve & Day, or “Holiday Moments”) and a tight color palette of three to four hues so everything feels cohesive. Gather your stories, like tree trimming, first snow, favorite gift, funny moments, etc., then build a tiny “kit” you can keep on your desk: album + page protectors, a handful of patterned papers and cardstock, a tape runner and liquid glue, scissors or a trimmer, a black pen, and a small dish of embellishments like labels, puffy stickers, enamel dots, and washi. Pre-cut a few photo mats and journaling cards so when December hits, you can assemble pages fast. And keep a zip pouch for real-life ephemera like gift tags, ticket stubs, and wrapping paper offcuts, they add instant holiday magic.
Guurrrll, yes! That is where junk journals got their start! Bullet journals too. You will get plenty of inspiration with the layouts in this post, but you can create amazing pages without a single picture and you can literally rip stuff to give a great aesthetic. If you have regular ole scissors, those work too. Use magazines for pictures, grab paint samples from the grocery story, stamps and other stationary from your mail – lots of places to find free stuff you can use. If you have a bit of a budget, you can use sticker alphabets, pre-cut die-cuts, printable journaling cards, cardstock paper, etc., and this will have you set up.
A scrapbook is usually built around photos, memories, and keepsakes, often with a more organized, album-style look, like a few of the scrapbook layouts in this post. Junk journals are all about freedom and fun! They don’t have to include photos and often use found papers, ticket stubs, and layered textures. If you want to see the difference in action, just scroll through the skeleton ideas right here for inspiration! We also have a post giving examples of the difference. Check it out here!
