What is the Mothman Legend?

The Mothman legend is basically West Virginia’s spookiest claim to fame. Back in the late 1960s, people in Point Pleasant started reporting sightings of a huge, winged creature with glowing red eyes lurking near an old bridge.
Local legends and conspiracy theories say that whenever someone spots Mothman, something bad is about to happen. He’s like a harbinger of doom. The most famous example is the 1967 collapse of the Silver Bridge, which happened shortly after a wave of Mothman sightings. Since then, people say that if you see Mothman, you should be on the lookout for disaster, tragedy, or some major “uh-oh” event.
The Mothman became a full-on cryptid celebrity. There are books, a movie, even an annual festival. Mothman is now Halloween (and TikTok) top tier lore.

FAQ: Mothman Costume Ideas
Absolutely! Most of the best DIY Mothman costumes on TikTok (and IRL) are all about creativity, not a big budget. This post shows you a pretty low cost way of creating it. You can also use thrifted hoodies, craft-store felt, and some dollar store faux fur or feather boas to build out the wings and body. Cardboard, hot glue, and a little paint go a long way. The key is playing up the big red eyes and dramatic wings, everything else is just a bonus!
It totally can be! The comfort level comes down to your materials and how you build it. The one featured in this post is SUPER wearer friendly! Other options include Soft fabric for the base, like you fav black hoodie or sweatshirt, lightweight wings, and adjustable straps make it easy to move and party in. If you keep the headpiece simple (like goggles or felt circles for eyes), you’ll be able to eat, dance, and haunt the night without getting overheated.
Yep! No sewing machine, no problem. This is kind of our life motto. Lol. The costume featured here uses some velcro strips where we have to hold it down. Other ideas like fabric glue, hot glue, safety pins, and iron-on patches are all your friends for a no-sew Mothman look. Most DIY wings can be hot glued to a shirt or attached to a backpack. Options for the eyes can be cut from felt and glued onto a hat or headband.
You can make a simple version in an afternoon, see the post here, but allow extra time for paint or glue to dry if you’re getting fancy with the wings or eyes. The process can be as quick or detailed as you want it to be!
How do you make a DIY Mothman Costume?

Here is how you can create your DIY Mothman costume! We broke it down into body, head, and finishing touches.
How To Make the Mothman Wings
Cape
This will give you the wing like effect, especially once you have the finishing touches over it. She did say she put shoulder straps to keep in on her shirt, so you can find those here. Underneath this, she wore a turtleneck and said you can either wear fishnets with a skirt and boots, or jeans. Whatever your comfort (and weather) preference is.
How To Make the Mothman Head
Helmet
Get the cheapest black skating helmet you can find. (Even better if you have one already around the house, obvi) You don’t want a cycling helmet because of the shape on the front. This will essentially be the structure of the entire costume.
How To Make The Mothman Eyes
These are the type of lights she used for the Mothman eyes. They stick on with tape on the back. You want to make sure they get as close to the front center of the helmet as possible, so they are not pointing up to the sky (especially if you are taller.).
*Pro Tip* If you are doing a couples costume with.these, this remote will change any light that’s near it, You can really freak out the people your partner may be talking too.
The Finishing Touches
Take this and drape it over the whole thing
Then you get you some ostrich feathers – you are going to want to get a pack of them because some will be wonky. You are going to want them to match. What you do is stick them through your spooky black Halloween fabric and into the skating helmet. As Sarah says, the helmet has holes in the top that are designed specifically for sticking ostrich feathers. LOL
