How do I make a Halloween scrapbook layout or junk journal page that comes together fast?

Credit: liu_journal

When you find out, let us know! We are so slow when we are putting a page together. Usually it is because we have a hard time narrowing down what we want to use.

If this is your first layout or your first time scrapping the season, pull a paper collection with halloween paper in traditional orange, then calm it down with a strip of plain paper for journaling.

Let the main focus be two fun pictures from halloween costumes. Print a set of white photos if your backgrounds are busy. Build on patterned paper, then add a perfect title pulled from spooky sayings and finish with cute embellishments. Too many pics from the corn maze or a party? Slide extras into pocket pages.

Keep a simple design so it looks like a great layout without a lot of hard work. For a closer look, plan the next layout with one bold chipboard piece, and the last layout as a tiny grid. It’s a great idea when your energy dips and you still want that win.

FAQs: Halloween Scrapbooking & Junk Journaling

A scrapbook is usually built around photos, memories, and keepsakes, often with a more organized, album-style look, like many of the scrapbook layouts in this post. Junk journals are all about freedom and fun! They don’t have to include photos and often use found papers, ticket stubs, and layered textures. If you want to see the difference in action, just scroll through the page ideas right here for inspiration! We also have a post giving examples of the difference. Check it out here!

Build the background first on heavy cardstock or watercolor paper, let it dry fully, then bring the photos to the party. If you’re spraying inks or using texture paste, give the page a quick clear gesso before you start so colors behave. When everything’s dry, mount photos on simple mats and pop them up on a little foam so they sit above gritty bits. If a layer feels chalky, a light mist of matte fixative keeps flakes off your prints. Slip finished pages into protectors or a ring binder with a wider spine, and use a real glue combo on bulky elements so they don’t pop off later.

What you want to do is some junk journaling, ma’am!! That is how it all got started! Tell the season, not just the night. Do a page about your porch decor, a candy taste test, a movie marathon, the pumpkin patch ticket that’s still in your coat pocket. Save wrappers, invites, receipts, and stitch them into a junk journal spread. No-photo layouts count, so make a big title, add the date, ink a moon with a few bats, and jot two lines about what you did. There is plenty of inspiration on this page, in our Halloween series, and our Scrapbook section of the blog for all the seasons. Go check it out and be inspired!

That’s the whole point of these blog posts! LOL! I am constantly inspired by other people’s creations, so I love to have these as a reference. Another option is to keep a tiny list on your desk so pages move fast. Titles that always land: Trick or Treat, Boo Crew, Witch Please, Here for the Candy, Hocus Pocus Night, Costume Chaos, Spooky Season, Haunted House, Pumpkin Patrol, Ghosted, Monster Mash. For journaling, try one-liners like the best candy you scored, the scare that got you, the weather on the walk, who answered the door, the playlist you had on repeat. Two sentences and a date, done.

What is the difference between a scrapbook and a junk journal?

How do I use messy mediums (sprays, inks, texture paste) without ruining photos?

Build the background first on heavy cardstock or watercolor paper, let it dry fully, then bring the photos to the party. If you’re spraying inks or using texture paste, give the page a quick clear gesso before you start so colors behave. What can I scrapbook for Halloween if I don’t have many photos?

What you want to do is some junk journaling, ma’am!! That is how it all got started! Tell the season, not just the night. What papers and embellishments work best for Halloween scrapbooking and junk journaling?

Lean on themed paper that fits your halloween theme and build clusters that feel intentional. I like spooky scrapbook layouts with vellum, labels, and a little metallic for pop. Rotate alphas, die cuts, and tags so you end up with amazing layouts across your halloween projects.

My favorite thing is mixing a tiny print with one bold accent for balance. If you want a moodier look, try a haunting layout with dark inking and torn edges.

I’ll share a closer peek of lots of ideas in the following layouts, so you can grab spooky inspiration without overthinking.
