We are so here for it. There is just *something* about a yellow layout.
It’s one of those main colors that catches your attention in the best way. Whether you’re scrapping birthday parties, sunshiney road trips, or that one cousin’s backyard graduation with the inflatable flamingos (you know the one), yellow brings the energy.
It also pairs with complementary colors like a pro. We are smitten in particular when it is used with a purple hue.
If you’ve got a stash of patterned paper that’s a little chaotic (we call it “eclectic”), yellow is your best friend. Throw in some inch squares, layer on different shades from lemon to mustard, and bam—instant personality.
When you are doing a mixed media layout, it is especially perfect. Add a splash of watercolor paint, a few wonky flag banners, maybe even a crooked die cut you pretend was totally intentional? Amazing.
And if you’re working in junk journal pages or your “oops-all-yellow” mini album, you will absolutely get bonus points for being bold.

We get asked this A LOT. Like, what is the point of it? First of all, its a hobby! Its fun! Creative! Relaxing! But if we want to get more technical, the main point of scrapbooking (and junk journaling!) is to capture memories and express yourself creatively. For some, it’s all about preserving special moments and family stories; for others, it’s more like art therapy. A way to relax and play with paper, photos, and a little glue. Or as we say, we stick paper on paper. At Slowestuff, we say: do what feels fun! Yeesh!
Great question, and we get this one a lot too! Scrapbooking usually means layouts built around photos and memories, like a fancy, decorated photo album. Junk journaling? That’s pure “do what you want” energy. Think random scraps, tickets, receipts, art, no rules, no photos required. If you love structure, go scrapbook. Fair enough, as much as I love yellow, working with it can be a bit tricky. You want it to stand out and not get faded, so one idea is to mix up different shades of it. Lemon with mustard with gold, as an example. Also, if you add contrasting elements, even small ones, like black pen outlines or dark washi tape, it really sets it off. Don’t forget about purple, too! They’re opposites on the color wheel, so you know it works. One of our favorites to go with yellow is white. A crisp white background can make yellow “pop” big time.
