With lilac, your page is quiet and soft, whispering secrets. But use a darker shade like plum? She becomes a powerhouse of bewitching energy. Purple shades can come off as mysterious and moody, or sweet & innocent, but either way, purple doesn’t just sit on the page. Purple casts a spell.

But if we want to get more technical, the main point of scrapbooking (and junk journaling!) is to capture memories and express yourself creatively. For some, it’s all about preserving special moments and family stories; for others, it’s more like art therapy. A way to relax and play with paper, photos, and a little glue. Or as we say, we stick paper on paper. At Slowestuff, we say: do what feels fun! Yeesh!
Great question, and we get this one a lot too! Scrapbooking usually means layouts built around photos and memories, like a fancy, decorated photo album. Junk journaling? That’s pure “do what you want” energy. Think random scraps, tickets, receipts, art, no rules, no photos required. If you love structure, go scrapbook. Full disclosure – we are totally biased because we LOVE purple. We think you should journal with every purple shade because they all give a different vibe! Lighter purples like lilac or lavender go beautifully with spring photos, floral pages, or anything whimsical. Darker plums and deep purples add a dramatic, elegant feel. These look SO GOOD black and white photos. Of course, obvi, it is made for Halloween themes too. It makes everything look expensive and a little bit magical, and we are all about some magic. Some of our FAVORITE scrapbookers or journalers – like the ones featured in this post, hardly use scrapbook paper at all. Really! You can totally DIY a purple-themed page with stuff you already have. Grab anything purple, like tissue paper from a gift, a magazine ad, purple sticky notes, candy wrappers. One of our favorite things is grabbing paint chips from the hardware store. Add in purple pens, highlighters, or colored pencils for journaling or doodles. We are also loving mixed media more and more, so add in ink! Stickers, washi tape, or just random ephemera in purple shades will make your page pop. Junk journaling is all about using what you have, so embrace the random! It’s part of the magic.
