Window Clings for Fridges: A Subtle Alternative

Okay, maybe you love the idea of a statement fridge, but you’re not quite ready to cover the entire thing in wallpaper. Or maybe you actually LIKE your stainless steel refrigerator and don’t want to hide it!

That’s where decorative window clings and decals come in.

Instead of covering the whole surface, you can add a little floral detail, a whimsical design, or something unexpected while letting the original refrigerator finish show through.

It’s a completely different look from a fully wallpapered fridge, but that’s what makes it fun. Sometimes your refrigerator just needs a little pizzazz, not an entire new outfit.

Just make sure the cling or decal is designed to work with your refrigerator’s finish before applying it.

Start Small! Other Things You Can Wallpaper

Not ready to commit to wallpapering an entire refrigerator? Fair enough! That’s a pretty big project when you’ve never worked with peel-and-stick wallpaper before.

Why not start with something smaller?

A dishwasher, mini fridge or even a trash can are great things to experiment on. Think about a dorm room fridge, a camper, hunting camp or somewhere else that can be a little more lax, and where you feel more comfortable trying it out. You can even just use it to upgrade a part of your appliance. You will see one picture where the creator just used it on the handles, for the two toned look. Genius!

💡 Slowestuff Tip: A Little Wallpaper Goes a Long Way
You don’t have to wallpaper the entire refrigerator to make a statement! One clever creator wanted gold handles against her stainless steel fridge, so she used metallic wallpaper to get that gorgeous two-tone look without replacing the appliance. Think about using wallpaper on just the handles, one panel, or even the side of your fridge. Sometimes a small detail is all it takes to get the look you want!

Fridge Wallpaper FAQs

Yes, they can! But first, it depends on whether your refrigerator is magnetic to begin with. Traditional white, black, and colored refrigerators often have painted steel exteriors, so magnets usually stick to them. Stainless steel refrigerators are a little trickier because some are magnetic and others aren’t, depending on the materials used. Not all stainless steel refrigerators are the same. Some use magnetic stainless steel, while others use nonmagnetic stainless steel or different materials beneath a stainless steel finish. That’s why magnets stick to some refrigerators but not others. You may even find that magnets stick to the sides of your fridge but not the doors! If your refrigerator is magnetic, magnets can often still stick through thin peel-and-stick wallpaper, although thicker wallpaper may weaken their hold, so make sure to get you some stronger magnets. If you love the idea of combining wallpaper with framed artwork (which we totally love), check out our Fridge Gallery Wall Ideas for more inspiration.

As you can see from our [How to put wallpaper on a fridge post], there are people that take it off fairly regularly, to put on a different style. Peel-and-stick wallpaper is designed to be removable, although you may have some adhesive residue left on your fridge when you remove it. That is usually taken care of easily with an adhesive remover. Several factors may affect how easily it comes off, like the type of wallpaper, the adhesive, the appliance’s surface, and how long it’s been applied. You can always test a small, hidden area first to make sure it will work with your fridge. When it’s time for a change, follow the wallpaper manufacturer’s removal instructions to minimize the risk of damage.

Yes, as you can see from some of the statement fridges, stainless steel refrigerators can be covered with peel-and-stick wallpaper. It does, however, depend on the appliance’s finish and the wallpaper’s adhesive. Certain stainless steel coatings and fingerprint-resistant finishes may not be suitable for adhesive products. Check your refrigerator manufacturer’s care instructions before applying anything, and test a small, inconspicuous area first. If you love your stainless steel finish, decorative decals designed for that surface might be another way to add a little style without covering the entire appliance.

Removable peel-and-stick wallpaper is generally the best option for a refrigerator makeover. Look for a smooth, flexible material that’s easy to clean and suitable for the temperatures and conditions where you’ll apply it. Thin wallpaper is often easier to work around edges and handles than thicker, heavily textured products. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions before applying it to an appliance.

Wallpaper shouldn’t affect how your refrigerator works if it’s applied only to suitable decorative surfaces and doesn’t interfere with the appliance’s operation. However, refrigerators need proper airflow to release heat, so it’s important not to cover ventilation openings or interfere with door seals, hinges, controls, or required clearances. Since these are designed to be cosmetic, you shouldn’t be messing with those areas of the fridge anyway. As always, check your refrigerator manufacturer’s recommendations before starting your makeover. A beautiful statement fridge is great, but it still needs to keep your groceries cold!
