How Do You Make a Santa-Themed Scrapbook or Junk Journal Page Look Festive Without Feeling Too Busy?

Believe it or not, you might not want to start off with a Christmas themed paper. I know, I know! They are so gorgeous, but hear me out.

If your background is already packed with Santas, ornaments, candy canes, trees, and snowflakes, it does not leave much room for the rest of the page to breathe. Starting with a quieter background cardstock or a more subtle patterned paper gives you space to build the Santa theme with layers instead of having every element compete from the beginning.

From there, choose one main Santa image or focal point and let the rest of the design support it. A Christmas tree, presents, holly, bells, or a few die cuts can add that fun Christmas feeling without tipping the page into too much detail. The prettiest Christmas layouts usually have one obvious focal area, then smaller clusters that help move your eye around the page.

You can still bring in all those gorgeous pattern papers, just use them in smaller pieces. Tuck them behind a photo, tear a strip for a border, layer a tag over them, or use a paper doily or scallop circles to break up busier prints. That way you get all the color and festive detail without losing the Santa himself in the middle of it.

If the page still feels like it needs something, add texture before adding more stuff. Embossed cardstock, ribbon, lace, a little ink spray, or a white pen can create interesting effects without making the whole design feel crowded. Sometimes that is all a page idea needs for a bit of a creative boost.

✨ Slowestuff Tip:
Before you glue anything down, take a quick picture of your page with your phone. Santa pages can have a lot of layers, and it is surprisingly easy to forget exactly where that little tag, strip of paper, or embellishment was sitting once you start taking everything apart to glue it down. A quick photo gives you a reference so you can rebuild the arrangement you already loved instead of trying to remember where everything went.

What Can You Use to Create Santa Scrapbook and Junk Journal Pages?

Santa is ALWAYS the star of the show!

Since he is such a strong focal point, there are so many things you can build around him. Start with the version of Santa you want your page to have, then let that guide the rest of the design. A vintage Santa is amazing with old book paper, postage stamps, ribbon, lace, muted reds, antique gold, and aged-looking ephemera. A brighter Santa can handle bold pattern papers, candy canes, ornaments, gifts, stars, and a colorful Christmas tree without getting lost.

You can also use die cuts, tags, labels, stickers, ticket shapes, bows, holly, bells, snowflakes, and little present embellishments to fill in the areas around him. For more texture, try embossed cardstock, a paper doily, torn edges, or even scallop circles layered behind smaller pieces. Texture and dimension take pages to the next level. These are easy ways to make a Christmas page feel finished without covering every inch.

If you are working on scrapbook pages, Santa can sit beside Christmas photos, handwritten memories, gift tags, or little keepsakes from the season. Junk journal pages give you even more freedom to use different types of papers, envelopes, pockets, vintage images, scraps, and found pieces. That mix is part of what makes Santa pages so fun because every one can look completely different.

And you already know that junk journalers are hoarders. We don’t throw anything away. Leftover letters, bits of ribbon, tiny paper scraps, labels, and old Christmas cards can all become part of a title or embellishment cluster. Sometimes those small pieces are what turn a pretty layout into a really special page.

For me, the best Santa pages are the ones where he is the focus, even on busy pages. Everything else should help tell his story, not compete with him.

Santa Scrapbook & Junk Journal FAQs

Not sure what to do with that Santa image, a pile of Christmas scraps, or a page that just needs something? These FAQs cover a few common questions about Santa scrapbook and junk journal pages.

Start with an old-fashioned Santa image, then build around him with muted reds, cream, kraft paper, deep green, sheet music, vintage cards, postage stamps, lace, and distressed edges. A few aged-looking layers and nostalgic details are usually enough to give the page a vintage Christmas feel without making it look overly themed.

Some of the best statement Santa images are hiding in places you might normally throw away. Old Christmas cards, holiday magazines, grocery store magazines, catalogs, gift tags, packaging, and even food containers can have amazing Santa artwork. The sturdier cardboard and cardstock pieces are especially useful because they already have enough weight to become a focal point on the page. Free grocery store magazines are one of my favorite places to look during the holidays. They often have large, colorful Christmas images that are perfect for cutting out and using in scrapbook or junk journal pages. If you find a Santa image you really love, cut around it and attach it with puffy tape or foam adhesive instead of gluing it flat. That little bit of dimension helps Santa stand out from the background and really makes him the star of the page.

Guurrrll, yes! You can absolutely make a Santa scrapbook or junk journal page without a single photo. Use Santa images from magazines, old Christmas cards, catalogs, packaging, or even sturdy food boxes, then build around him with torn paper, paint samples, stamps, labels, ribbon, and other found pieces. If you have a little budget, add sticker alphabets, pre-cut die cuts, journaling cards, or cardstock, but Santa himself can do most of the heavy lifting.

A scrapbook is usually built around photos, memories, and keepsakes, often with a more organized, album-style look, like a few of the scrapbook layouts in this post. Junk journals are all about freedom and fun! They don’t have to include photos and often use found papers, ticket stubs, and layered textures. If you want to see the difference in action, just scroll through the ideas right here for inspiration! We also have a post giving examples of the difference. Check it out here!
